About
I hold a Master of Music in Composition from Virginia Commonwealth University and have been teaching private theory and keyboard lessons since 1995. Over the years, I have performed in several different function bands as a singer, a keyboardist and as a trombonist. In 2007, after completing a certification course in a modern vocal technique, I added "vocal coach" to my credits. In 2008, I opened The Singers & Musicians Studio in Keene, NH, a performance based pop music school. In the five years we were open, our students performed in twenty different student gigs at various venues around our local community.
Teaching Style
Music education is an opportunity to cultivate individuality, teach problem-solving skills and to build confidence. Understanding the principles of music theory and good vocal technique are extremely important, but to me, they come second to these other benefits. Music composition and vocal coaching is an opportunity for a student to learn who he/she is, both as an artist and a person - to understand personal strengths and to exercise and improve upon weaknesses. To that end, every one of my students is treated as an individual, with lessons designed to match personal goals and strengths.
Curriculum
My students use interactive online programs to practice and test their theory and composition skills. I regularly check in to evaluate their progress, and I can adjust these online assignments to match my students' needs. Students are also occassionally asked to complete worksheets, as well as to record their progress on video.
