Adam grew up listening to his dad practice trombone at home, and started playing clarinet in the fourth grade. In middle school, he started learning guitar and writing his own songs. In high school, Adam produced an album for his solo project and distributed his CDs. Adam studied Composition and Arranging at Azusa Pacific University, where he was a Music Theory TA and tutor.

He has performed all over the world as a soloist, with ensembles and bands, and in theatrical productions. Specializing in improvisation and alternative styles such as rock, pop, and jazz, Mr. Chang has also studied classical cello.
