Twist and Stitch: Saeksilnubi - Hand Quilting with Mulberry Paper

About Twist and Stitch: Saeksilnubi - Hand Quilting with Mulberry Paper

Saeksilnubi, colored thread quilting is a Korean traditional craft that uses two layers of fabrics, cords made with hanji (Korean mulberry paper), and colorful threads to make the quilted texture. Hanji cord or cotton cord was used for batting or stuffing. Repetition of lines created with Bageumjil (back stitch) and Hanji cord make a geometrical pattern and raised texture.

This class is limited to 50 students.

Class Materials Needed

• Two pieces of 7”x7” medium weight linen or cotton
• Needle and thread: #7 crewel needle and 12wt cotton thread. You can use many different colors of threads or use variegated thread to get some color changes while you stitch. (I usually use Wonderfil but your choice of brand is fine)
• Fabric marking tool- fabric pencil or fabric marker or heat erasable pen
• Ruler
• Wooden stylus or bamboo chopstick
• Craft scissors
• One sheet of Hanji (Korean mulberry paper).

You can purchase a kit which includes cut fabrics, a needle, thread, ready-to-cut folded hanji, a wooden stylus, and a design idea printout from Youngmin Lee’s website

Cut hanji into 1" strips ( a video tutorial link will be provided) and twist hanji strips into cords.
