Easy Flamenco for Beginning Guitarists

About Easy Flamenco for Beginning Guitarists With Leah Kruszewski

Flamenco guitar is a folk art from southern Spain that traditionally goes hand-in-hand with flamenco dance and singing.  The solo guitar style is often difficult for beginners because of demanding chord shapes and right-hand techniques.  This course is different - it’s especially designed to be accessible for new guitarists (brand new beginner through intermediate beginner welcome!).

We’ll focus on the most basic elements of guitar playing in the context of flamenco.  You’ll learn how to develop proper technique and practice habits from day one.  We’ll steer clear of barre chords, difficult left-hand stretches, and complex right-hand mechanisms, all of which can be stumbling blocks for new guitarists.  The fundamentals taught in this course will prepare you well for further studies in classical, fingerstyle, or more flamenco as you continue your guitar journey.

Class Goals

Outcome 1: Students will learn the fundamentals of guitar technique such as left-hand positioning, chords and chord changes, arpeggios, and playing melodies.
Outcome 2: Students will gain an understanding of how flamenco works as a genre and guitar style, as well as a bit of flamenco culture and history.
Outcome 3: Students will learn four simple solo pieces in the flamenco syles (‘palos’) Solea, Malagueña, Guajira, and Farruca.
Outcome 4: Students will finish the course well-prepared to continue their guitar studies in any genre they want - classical, fingerstyle, acoustic, or more flamenco.

I had an amazing learning experience in Leah’s Flamenco Palos class during the 12 weeks program. Each class was dedicated to one Palo. It started slow for me but in 3rd week, it quickly developed into “highlight of the week” on Sunday afternoon. The two-page handouts, sent before each class, were expertly prepared consisting of introduction of the Palo, its origin, music structures, compás, chords and the suggested You Tube links from Flamenco Masters. Second page contained the music. But don’t get fooled by the seemingly simplistic tabs. There were plenty of challenges requiring solid techniques to play well. Leah demonstrated not only her vast knowledge in Flamenco music also her impeccable guitar skills. She was enthusiastic, passionate and accommodating in teaching and always willing to go extra miles to allow ample opportunity for questions. Highly recommend this course to others. You will NOT be disappointed.
