About Fiber Speed Dating: Sheep Breeds Edition

Explore nine different sheep breeds while discussing approaches to spinning different types of wool - which drafting methods pair well with particular fiber preps or crimp structure or staple length? Should you judge a fiber by your first impression? We will discuss worsted and woolen drafting methods and how they relate to the wool you spin. Sheep breeds will include a fine wool, medium wool, down wool, long wool and an assortment of heritage breeds.


Supplies, Equipment & Materials Needed for Class

A spinning wheel or e-spinner or spindles in good working order with the capability of handling up to 6 ounces of fiber.


Materials Kit

Kit includes a Fiber Sampler with ½ ounce samples of 9 different wools and notecards.
Materials kits must be ordered by January 10 in order to receive them by January 24.

Participants should be able to spin and ply independently.

How It Works

Register and enroll above. Enrollment is not complete until payment is made on the next page, by credit card or Paypal via our secure platform. Enrolled students will receive an immediate email confirmation of enrollment, and on the day before the seminar, a reminder with Zoom link to join the class via email. Students will also be able to join the Zoom sessions from their Lessonface dashboard. Students can connect to Zoom using a tablet or computer with reliable internet. To actively participate online students also need a webcam with microphone.

As co-owner of HipStrings, Jill is dedicated to the resurgence of modern craft that is based on a foundation of technical and historical knowledge. This approach is reflected in the fiber, yarn and tools they’ve developed and produce. Jill shares their insights as a regular contributor to PLY magazine, with the goal of making the technical aspects of craft accessible to all.
