About Plying, Hints and Tricks (A)

How do you finish your yarn after you’ve spun the singles? Two ply, three ply, four ply, cabled yarns, chain ply—so many choices. How much twist do you need? Is it necessary to have a balanced yarn? We will ply them all and you can decide for yourself.


Supplies, Equipment & Materials Needed for Class

• Spinning wheel in good working condition and all its parts
• Lazy Kate
• At least 4 bobbins
• 3 storage bobbins with 1 oz. of wool singles on each.


Materials Kit

No materials kit for this class.


Pre-class Homework

3 oz. of singles spun at least 12 hours before class. Place on 3 storage bobbins with 1 oz. of wool singles on each.

Skill Level

Beginning spinning skills required. Students should be able to spin a continuous yarn and be comfortable with their wheel.

How It Works

Register and enroll above. Enrollment is not complete until payment is made on the next page, by credit card or Paypal via our secure platform. Enrolled students will receive an immediate email confirmation of enrollment, and on the day before the seminar, a reminder with Zoom link to join the class via email. Students will also be able to join the Zoom sessions from their Lessonface dashboard. Students can connect to Zoom using a tablet or computer with reliable internet. To actively participate online students also need a webcam with microphone.

Maggie Casey

    Maggie Casey has been addicted to spinning since the last century and while some people are proud of their wine cellars, she much prefers her fleece basement. She was co-owner of Shuttles Spindles & Skeins until it closed in 2020. Besides teaching spinning at Shuttles, she also teaches at the Estes Park Wool Market, Maryland Sheep & Wool, the Ply Guild, SSK and SOAR. She holds Part 1 of HGA’s COE in Handspinning, is the author of Start Spinning, Everything You Need to Know to Make Great Yarn and several LongThread videos. She frequently writes for Ply magazine.
