ABOUT MINA
Go to Mina's Teaching Profile to Schedule a Private Lesson or Send Her a MessageMina Yu is a pianist-composer from Seoul, South Korea. At the age of four, she began studying piano with her mother, Kyung Hee Kim, a highly renowned piano teacher. After beginning her training as a professional classical pianist, she found it more fun to play pop, blues, and jazz.
Her talent was soon recognized, and she became the youngest winner of many piano competitions in Korea, including the Sirius Star Project by Sony BMG and the Khung Hyang Youth Competition.
In 2008, she was accepted at Berklee College of Music as an international student with a renewable scholarship. During her time at the college, she had the opportunity to meet and play with many great musicians such as Greg Osby, Ron Reid, Terri Lyne Carrington, Dave Samuels, and Sean Skeete. She has also received the Mary Jane Earnhart Award and Professional Division Award by Berklee College of Music and was the pianist of the Berklee Contemporary Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Writers' Collective.
In the past year, Mina has performed at Berklee Performance Center (BPC), Jordan Hall, the Lilypad Jazz Club, Ryles Jazz Club, Boston Common, Cafe Luna, TT the Bears, Copperfield's and many others. She is also an accomplished composer and band leader and was given the opportunity to host her own show at the BPC in spring 2012 and summer 2012 featuring saxophonist Greg Osby. Mina has toured internationally, performing at the Jazzaar festival in Switzerland with Adam Rogers, Helen Sung, and Terri Lyne Carrington. She also toured England with a rock band and performed at the Guil Fest.
During the last two years Mina has recorded a number of projects, including albums with Jidam from Korea and Cettina Donato from Italy, which will be released in Italy by Jazzy records. She has composed for Korean writing companies and has been an accompanist for the Fruitful Harvest Church.
She is currently pursuing her graduate studies of jazz performance in Manhattan School of Music. She has received MSM Scholarship and CJ Culture Foundation Award in 2013. Mina will soon release her first album in April 2014, which is filled with her own original compositions.
