Swatch Your Vacation
About Swatch Your Vacation
Knitting or crocheting an improvised log cabin square inspired by a vacation or a backyard garden or a beloved work of art is a great way to use small amounts of yarn to experiment with colors and textures while creating a small keepsake. Use your square as a swatch for a future fiber project, or use the experience as a way to quietly meditate on the memories of a special location or treasure.
What will students learn:
Log cabin square construction in knit or crochet, adjusting for different gauges of yarn, incorporating favorite stitches into the “logs,” combining knit and crochet if desired.
Materials, Equipment, and Supplies the Student Must Bring to Class
Choose a photo of a memory or location or treasure and bring small amounts (10-25 yds each) of yarns from your stash in colors that represent the subject matter. If you don’t have the perfect color, choose a substitute that’s the same intensity as the inspiration. Bring hooks and/or needles in sizes appropriate for your yarns. Also bring scissors and a yarn needle.
