Super Singles: Thick to Thin and Then Some
About Super Singles: Thick to Thin and Then Some
Let’s discover the magic of spinning singles. In this workshop, we’ll start with light, lofty singles perfect for knitting, crochet, or weft. Then we’ll explore thicker singles full of soft, squishy goodness, and after that, we’ll explore twist and diameter and discuss their impact in knitting, crochet, and weaving. You’ll learn how to draft consistently—or playfully inconsistently—and how to finish your singles so they behave the way you want. You’ll complete a set of samples as you build the skills to spin singles that work exactly the way you want.
Supplies, Equipment & Materials Needed for Class
• Spinning tools (treadle wheel, e-spinner, or spindles)
• Bobbin/yarn management tool such as a Lazy Kate for plying
• Any accessories as needed for your treadle wheel, e-spinner, or spindles
• 2 ounces of wool top; can be solid color or space-dyed. It may be useful to have some different solid colors available as well. Note that for some of our methods this must be wool top, not a batt or roving. If you are using a fiber other than wool, you must already be comfortable spinning that fiber with a short-draw technique.
• 4 – 8 embroidery floss bobbins or 1½” x 1½” squares of cardboard (flat cardboard with 2 slits) used for winding singles around.
