Join me for an immersive and hands-on experience learning about fascinating fungi that produce beautiful dyes. In this class, you’ll learn about the history of mushroom dyeing, techniques on dyeing with mushrooms, safe mushroom handling and harvesting techniques. We will also be hands on dyeing with two great beginner friendly mushrooms.

What will students learn:
A quick history mushrooms as a dye source, followed by the standard process of dyeing with mushrooms and information on the mushrooms the class will being dyeing with. We will also be discussing safe mushroom handling and harvesting techniques. I will provide information on several local dye mushrooms that people can go out and harvest themselves if they like.

Materials Kit and Kit Description

Your class registration fee includes a materials kit with a value of $50 which includes:

Pre mordanted hanks, 2 per student
Non mordanted hank, 1 per student
2 Mushroom species to dye with.
- Mason Jars
- Alum Mordant
- Disposable gloves


Pre-class Homework

Due to the amount of information that will be covered in this course I would recommend watching: "Try It And See: The story behind the discovery of mushrooms dyes" . This is a great documentary on YouTube and I will be elaborating on a lot of the talking points from this documentary.

What skills or knowledge do students need to take this workshop?

A basic understanding of pre mordants and they are used for natural dyeing yarn.
