Clipped, Fringed and Whiskered: Fil-Coupé and Clip Spot Weaves

About Clipped, Fringed and Whiskered: Fil-Coupé and Clip Spot Weaves

Fil coupé is a textile technique where long floats in a woven fabric are cut post-production to create texture, a raised pattern, or fringed effect. It means "cut thread" in French.
Exciting fashion and interior textiles, designed to weave with long warp or filling floats, are finished by clipping the floats after weaving to create 3-dimensional surface pattern effects in the final fabric.

Cut and clipped patterns are especially appealing when used as accents on scarves, shawls, and decorative textiles like pillow covers.

This presentation will introduce a wide range of woven fabrics with fil-coupé clipped effects. Examples of weave structures for clip-spot designs, for 2 to 24 shafts looms will be included. Drafts and finishing instructions for clipped woven designs will be included in the presentation handouts.
