Finishing Your Yarn with Maggie Casey

About Finishing Your Yarn with Maggie Casey

When I first learned to spin, I thought there was just one way to finish your yarn. You washed it, rinsed it and hung it to dry with a light weight if it was misbehaving. I was missing so much information. In fact, maybe you shouldn’t finish your yarn at all until you have used it in your project. It depends! In this class we’ll explore the reasons for finishing or not and then play with some of the different ways to finish your yarn. We’ll also see if the way you spin your yarn may determine how you finish it. We will talk about finishing cellulose fibers as well. Note: There will be time to do some of the finishing techniques so hot and cold water should be available nearby.

Supplies, Equipment & Materials Needed for Class

• There will be time to do some of the finishing techniques so cold and hot water should be available nearby
• Students should have 8-12 small skeins of handspun wool to try different finishing techniques
• The skeins should be big enough to make a small swatch or sample to understand how the finishing can affect the project
• Most of these can be skeins of different wools or the same wool, your choice
• For two of the skeins, spin one skein woolen and one skein worsted of the same fiber
