Swingin' from New York to Japan: Jazz Flute Workshop

スウィンギン’ ニューヨークから日本へ：ジャズ フルート ワークショップ

Lessonface is pleased to offer a rare opportunity to attend a Jazz Flute Improv Workshop (in-person or online), co-led by two of today's leading jazz flute players from the US and Japan! New York recording artist, Ali Ryerson, joins forces with her Japanese friend and colleague, Yuko Hoshi, founder and leader of the Japan Jazz Flute Big Band.  Yuko's Tokyo-based jazz flute ensemble will be on tour in the US in April, featuring Ali Ryerson as guest soloist. During the NYC leg of their tour, Ali and Yuko plan to co-lead an improv workshop, accompanied by Yuko's excellent Japanese rhythm section, at the Lessonface Studio. The workshop is being held on Wednesday, April 11th at 7pm (EDT), which is Thursday April 12 at 8am in JAPAN, and will be approximately 75 minutes in length. Students are invited to attend both in-person and online.

ニューヨークのレーディング・アーティストのアリ・ライアソン氏と彼女の友人で日本のフルートビッグバンドの創始者でリーダーの星優子氏による共同開催。東京を拠点とする星優子氏のジャズフルートアンサンブルは４月に アリ・ライアソン氏を ゲストソリストに迎えアメリカツアーを行う予定で、その間にニューヨークのレッスンフェイス スタジオで日本からの素晴らしいリズムセクションを伴い共同でワークショップを行います。開催日時はニューヨークの4月11日(水)午後7時、日本時間の4月12日(木)午前8時から約75分間の予定です。受講は現地のスタジオでも、日本からオンラインでも可能です。

Several flutists will be selected in advance (only students attending live will be considered) to play with the rhythm section (piano, bass and drums) and be coached by Ali and Yuko! (Two or three tunes will be sent to all students in advance). Please contact jess@lessonface.com if you would like to be considered as a student performer.

With a career spanning over four decades, jazz flutist Ali Ryerson consistently ranks among the top flutists in the Downbeat Jazz Poll. Born in 1952 in New York City, Ali grew up in a musical family. Her father, Art Ryerson, was a renowned jazz guitarist who got his start with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, and later became a top studio player in NYC, recording with everyone from Louis Armstrong to Charlie Parker.

Ali Ryerson carried on the family tradition, becoming an international touring/recording artist, with performances ranging from Carnegie Hall to festival appearances worldwide. Ali has worked with jazz greats such as Red Rodney, Roy Haynes, Kenny Barron, Frank Wess, Hubert Laws, Stephane Grappelli, Mike Mainieri, and Joe Beck, as well as a recent guest appearance with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. She has performed with classical artists Julius Baker and Luciano Pavarotti (while Ryerson was principal flutist with the Monterey Bay Orchestra). Ali has served as musical director of the Hudson River Regional Jazz Festival (2001-’04), NFA Jazz Chair (’05-’10) and Low Flutes Chair (current) of the NFA (National Flute Association), and founded the NFA Jazz Flute Big Band. 

Ryerson is Professor of Flute at Sacred Heart University, has published the widely acclaimed ‘Jazz Flute Practice Method’ and ‘Jazz Flute Masterclass’ DVD (Lessonface), and conducts master classes worldwide, including her week-long annual master class held at Hidden Valley Music Seminars in California, and an online master class series through LessonFace in NYC. As a composer, Ali has published numerous works commissioned for flute ensembles. Ms. Ryerson studied flute with Harold Bennett (former principal flute w/Metropolitan Opera) and John Wion ((former principal flute w/NYC Opera), and is a graduate of the Hartt School of Music. Ryerson is a Gemeinhardt Artist with an Autograph Series of flutes. 

Ali's most recent invitations as guest artist include the Galway Flute Festival in Switzerland, the International Flute Festival of Lima, Peru, the 60th Monterey Jazz Festival, the New York Flute Club, the Florida Flute convention, the Rochester Flute Fair, and the Chicago Flute Fair.
