Scandinavian Loom Beading, Level-1 with Laura Berlage
Explore the beauty and fun of beading on a loom in the Scandinavian tradition! Inspired by designs from Nordic bandweaving, this class will take you from start to finish for making your own sparkly beaded bookmark. Learn about the historic use of loom beading and how a remarkably simple process can transform seed beads into delightful designs. The class kit includes a handmade loom designed by the instructor and enough beads, silk thread, needles, and patterns to make two projects, if you wish.
This class is presented in collaboration with John C. Campbell Folk School and Lessonface. Class capacity is 12 students. Registration closes on October 22, 2023. Students are invited to attend a large group Orientation and Closing Ceremony to connect with various classes online.
Class Materials
Your class registration fee includes a materials kit with a value of $85 shipped to your door. Residents outside the USA will pay the difference in shipping.
The kit includes:
• Hand made wood beading loom that I designed for ease of warping
• Size D silk thread
• 2 beading needles
• Size 8 Miyuki seed beads for the 2 projects (gold, silver, and theme color)
• Drafted patterns for the projects
• Digital access to a process photo essay and video tutorials
Students will also want to provide:
• Sharp thread scissors and good lighting.
If magnification is helpful, it can be quite useful for this project.

The class will meet for four weekly 120-min live online sessions on Thursdays at 1 pm ET | 10 am PT | 17:00 UTC on the schedule below. The first session is on November 2.
Enrolled students receive 30-day access to the video recordings of the classes.
How It Works
Enroll above to save your spot in the class. Lessonface will send you a confirmation right away, and a Zoom link 24 hours before the class start time. You can log into your Lessonface dashboard to access class materials, communicate with your instructor, join the live Zoom session, and access the class recordings and chat transcript afterward.
Refund Policy: To cancel an enrollment or request a refund, contact support@lessonface.com. For 30+ days before, we refund 95%. Between 30 and 5 days, receive a 75% refund. No refunds within 5 days of class start date. Materials kit fees are non-refundable.

It was delightful. A great group of people and Laura really kept everyone engaged. I love that she told a story and sang songs. Really gave me a feel for fiber arts of old and how just the practical part of fiber arts continued oral traditions (spoken and musical). The class also opened the door for simple gift making :)

Laura Berlage
Laura is a contemporary Renaissance woman living and working on her family’s century-old homestead farm outside Hayward, WI. From fiber arts to creative writing, music to storytelling, she never tires of the magic of transforming idea into form and overlapping narrative and visual. Laura also loves working with the many and beautiful natural materials from her farm—especially the wool from her sheep. Completing her MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts at Goddard College in 2011, Laura continues her lifelong passion for learning with mentorships and intensives that offer engaged, hands-on teaching with small groups to encourage creativity, imagination, and expression.
