Woodworking: Small Box Construction

Woodworking: Small Box Construction with Jan Bouterse

Master the fundamentals of box and biscuit joinery as you build an elegant cherrywood box with a hinged top and drawer. Using pre-cut pieces of American black cherry provided by the instructor, learn best practices for gluing up wood, applying a long-lasting finish, and installing an interior velvet “flock it” system. Gain the knowledge and confidence you need to apply your new skills to future projects, both boxes and beyond. All levels welcome; some woodworking experience is helpful but not required.

The capacity for this class is 12 students. This class is presented in collaboration with the John C. Campbell Folk School. There will be an optional Orientation and Closing Ceremony hosted from the Folk School campus that students can attend online.

Jan Bouterse

Jan was born and educated in the Netherlands and came to the US in his mid twenties. He always wanted to be a cabinet maker, started and operated his cabinet shop in 1985, sold it in 2007, and traveled for 5 years throughout the US to certify shops for the Architectural Woodworking Institute Quality certification Program. He has taught furniture making at The John C Campbell Folk School and counts this as one of his most wonderful experiences. In his words: "I have learned most from making mistakes and am still at it". Jan loves to see his grandchild 'tinker'. Please have a look at his website: https://www.janswood.com
