Old-Time Fiddling for Beginners and Beyond

About Old-Time Fiddling for Beginners and Beyond

Hey there, fiddling enthusiasts! Are you ready to take a deep dive into old-time fiddling?

This six-session class is designed for fairly advanced beginners and intermediate players. We’ll explore the rich musical heritage of the Appalachian South, where dance tunes like reels, breakdowns, and waltzes take center stage. We will also dip into old airs derived from hymns and secular songs, which can add depth and complexity to your repertoire.

Before you begin, it’s essential to have a genuine interest in traditional old-time fiddling, and beyond that, a grasp of basic instrument skills and at a modest repertoire of tunes already under your belt.

Learning by ear might seem intimidating at first, but trust me, it’s not as hard as you might think! I’ll break down the tunes into short, easy-to-digest phrases. Beyond simply learning the notes, we’ll explore different bowing techniques that will put the fiddle in your fiddling. And guess what? You’ll even learn a couple of alternative tunings, adding some exciting twists to your playing.

By the end of this class, you’ll have added to your repertoire with some wonderful, authentic, and accessible old-time fiddle tunes that I’ve personally learned from studying legendary fiddlers of the past.

So, come join me, and let’s have some fantastic old-time fiddling fun together!

The capacity for this class is 20 students.
