About Singing Mountain Songs for the Soul

Singing traditional ballads and folk songs helps strengthen us for hard times and celebrate the good times. This fun and interactive workshop will offer background on Appalachian ballad traditions and insight into vocal ornamentation. Connect with your own voice while going deep into traditional songs. Explore how and why we sing while building your repertoire and skill.

This class is presented in collaboration with the John C. Campbell Folk School & is limited to 24 students. There will be an optional Orientation and Closing Ceremony hosted from the Folk School campus that students can attend online.

The class will meet for four weekly 120-min live online sessions at 6 pm ET | 3 pm PT | 23:00 UTC on the schedule below. The first session is on February 4.

How It Works

Students can connect to the online platform using a tablet or computer with reliable internet. To actively participate online students also need a webcam with microphone. Class enrollments may be cancelled for full refund up to five days before the class start date.

Susan Pepper teaches ballad workshops at regional and national venues including Youth Traditional Song Weekend, The John C. Campbell Folk School and the Virtual Banjo and Fiddle Frolic. She has performed ballads at the Library of Congress and is included in the Traditional Artists Directory of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area. Pepper worked extensively with traditional Old time and Bluegrass music programs for youth in the Appalachians and has vast experience teaching folk song, guitar and mountain dulcimer to children of all ages.
