Violin & Viola Bow Strokes: Detaché, Martelé, Sautille & Spiccato

About Violin & Viola Bow Strokes: Detaché, Martelé, Sautille & Spiccato

Together, we’ll learn about the mother of all bow strokes: a proper Detaché followed by her very close relative: Martelé. Detaché belongs to the Legato family with fluid and continuous motion between notes, played with the middle of the bow for more consistent results. While Martelé feels more at home with the Staccato folks, where individual notes are strongly accented, highlighting their own distinction without blending one note into another, which could be performed in the upper, lower or middle-ish parts of the bow.

Gorgeous Spiccato stroke starts with a proper Sautille basics. One is the cousin of the other, that is why the two are often confused, especially because they are marked the same in the scores! Sautille involves very rapid, bounced, and detached strokes, seeming like it is off-string while Spiccato is on the slightly slower and controlled side, providing more volume and flexibility. Get ready to cover all the fundamentals!

Class Goals

As any proper bow technique begins with bow control, we'll start the class by reviewing the most natural and effective bow hold & visual distribution of the bow followed by practical exercises, starting just with your bow. Then, we’ll apply it all to the violin/viola while getting our hands on the understanding and exploring the inner workings of each stroke. Bring your questions on and get ready to show your strokes! We'll review everything you've learned and answer all and any doubts you might have. If you feel like not playing in public, I'll take up to 3 minutes of video to give you my personal feedback and help you with any issues you might have. You've got this as well as my support all along the way!
