Meet The Instruments with MET Orchestra Musicians

A professional violinist and professional trumpeter from the MET Orchestra playing their instruments during an interview about how students can choose the right instrument.

As summer comes to an end, students are getting ready to head back to school. Many will be resuming music lessons and practice; others will be picking up an instrument for the first time. For some the choice of which instrument to learn is clear; others may wonder which instrument is right for them, and how to approach the decision. In this conversation, four members of the MET Orchestra explain their choice, and discuss the role of their instrument in the orchestra.

We’re excited to present this conversation hosted by Grammy Award winning music educator, Melissa Salguero, with four musicians from the MET Orchestra. We are so incredibly lucky to get time with these phenomenal instrumentalists. Each guest represents a different instrument family: woodwinds, brass, strings and percussion. The conversation is a great way to introduce young kids (or any new musician) to the instruments of an orchestra.

Topics discussed include: Discovering the instrument that is right for you, overcoming obstacles and confronting stage fright. This interview was filmed in a studio in New York City and features MET Orchestra Musicians Stephanie Mortimore, Katherine Fong, Billy Ray Hunter, Jr., and Rob Knopper. Our sponsors include KHS America, Jupiter Band Instruments, XO and Majestic. We hope you enjoy the video and look forward to seeing you in class!
