Buying or renting violins for lessons

Are you interested in starting violin lessons but aren't sure how to go about getting a violin? Here are a few tips to get you started.

The most important thing about getting a violin, especially for young children, is getting the right size violin. Getting a violin that is too big can make it nearly impossible to play. This is one reason why renting a violin is appealing to many parents. As the child grows, they can swap out the violin for the next size. However, if you choose to buy a violin, many shops will give you store credit when you swap in your smaller violin for the next size up.

The best thing to do is to check out your local string shop or music shop.  They will often have rental instruments as well as instruments for purchase and they can help size you for the right size violin.

If you don't have a local shop, there are several online options for renting and buying violins. I recommend avoiding sites like eBay and stick with reputable online string companies.

When you get a violin, you will also need a bow and a case. Many rentals or purchases come with the bow and case as a package. Just make sure they are included.

Don't hesitate to contact any of Lessonface's teachers for advice. Booking a free trial lesson is also a great way to discuss your options for buying or renting a violin.

Happy Practicing!
