Five Questions With Singer Joshua Turner

Joshua Turner, LessonFace Online Voice Coach

Joshua Turner is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist who studied vocals at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He also attended the Musicians Institute, where he focused his learning on the guitar. Josh has produced, written, and played all instruments on two self-released albums by his band Eyes To Earth, sings and plays generally an acoustic set under his name Joshua W. Turner, and plays lead guitar with the band In Cahoots. He’s also a passionate advocate for music education and especially passing on vocal instruction as a way to build confidence throughout the entirety of a person’s life.

LessonFace: How did you first get introduced to singing, and what kind of music were you listening to at the time/growing up?

Joshua Turner: When growing up, I always thought that singers had to be born with their "good" voice and that some could sing, and some couldn't. Then when I was 16 years old, I expressed to a family friend who was a professional singer, that "I liked singing very much, and wished that I was born with a voice." She then informed me that I could develop my voice, just like you can develop a muscle from working out. From the moment I heard that, I dove into singing headfirst, and the rest is history!

LF: Did you have any particularly influential mentors early on, or later as you progressed?

JT: Ever since I was three years old, I had loved Axl Rose, his voice, and his stage presence. My father used to play "Appetite For Destruction" in his truck whenever we went on trips, so that album pretty much became the soundtrack to my childhood. I remember feeling really powerful and excited whenever I heard Axl singing, and he became the coolest dude on the block, in my eyes!

LF: What got you interested in teaching online?

JT: A friend of mine that I went to Berklee College of Music with in Boston told me about LessonFace and that it was a great company, so I contacted them, and now here I am ready to teach online!

LF: If you had to recommend one video or performance for prospective students to check out in order to understand you and your style, what would it be?

JT: I would recommend my students check out a Guns N' Roses (1988-1992 era) live video performance and watch Axl's stage presence and passion when he sings. Also, maybe a Smashing Pumpkins (1994-2000) live video performance, and watch Billy Corgan (lead singer) emote through his voice and guitar playing. Those would give a prospective student a pretty good indication on how I perform and approach singing.

Also, here’s a video of Josh bringing down the house, performing a song by his idol.

LF: Can you tell us a bit about what's going on with any musical projects you're working on, and any latest news about them?

JT: As of this moment, I am in the process of working on two albums. One is under my band project, Eyes To Earth, which I am in the process of recording. Another is under my name Joshua W. Turner, which is more of an acoustic singer/songwriter type vibe that I am also in the process of recording. I also played lead guitar on an album with a band called In Cahoots that will be released Spring 2013!
