About Beginner Guitar for Kids
Is your young musician curious about the guitar and not sure where to start? Do they love music but struggle to list their favorite songs or describe what music they like?
Sometimes we find the instrument we love before we know what kind of music we want to play! This class is designed to guide young guitarists in exploring different styles of guitar music and figuring out what they like.
We’ll dabble in chords and strumming, playing melodies with a pick, and using our right hand fingers to play fingerstyle, classical, and flamenco-inspired pieces. By the end of this course, your young guitarist will know songs in several different genres and have a better idea of what music they enjoy playing most.
This class is aimed at beginning guitarists ages 7 to 10 who have the attention span for a 30-minute class and the left hand strength to press down at the frets and get a clean sound. Slightly younger and older kids are welcome at their parents’ discretion.
This class is limited to 25 students.

Six-string guitar (nylon string, steel string, and electric guitars are welcome)

Playing Experience
This class is suitable for beginners, but players should have the dexterity and strength to press down on the frets with the left hand and get a clean sound. If you’ve already learned to play a simple melody or strum some chords, you’ll be all set.
Class Structure
Each class will last thirty minutes.
Students are encouraged to send the instructor videos of class songs between sessions to get feedback on their playing.
Parental Involvement
Parents of younger students, please plan to be present during the first class. For subsequent classes, mature students may be able to handle attending the class independently. Other children may need parental assistance throughout the entire course.
Class Goals
- 1. Learn the basics of guitar such as tuning, correct posture, and the names of the open strings.
- 2. Explore different styles of music that can be played on the guitar.
- 3. Learn how to use a pick to play a melody.
- 4. Learn how to use a pick to strum simple chords.
- 5. Learn how to use the right hand fingers to play arpeggio patterns.
- 6. Develop correct practice habits that are critical for musical growth and improvement.
- 7. Learn fundamentals of music that will apply to future music study on any instrument.
- 8. Enjoy learning music with enthusiastic guitar students all over the world!

The class will meet for ten weekly 30-min live online sessions on Sundays at 12 pm ET | 9 am PT | 16:00 UTC on the schedule below. The first session is on April 30.
