Essentials of Tapestry Design

About Essentials of Tapestry Design

Once you learn the basic techniques of tapestry, it can be challenging to create a design that you are confident you can weave. This class pulls together in one place nine key elements and strategies of design for tapestry from across Molly’s classes and years of experience. Home in on your own personal purpose and voice. Learn how to begin with photos or collage and transform them to develop a design to weave. Discover the key aspects of color and value to keep in mind. Learn why sampling is important. . . and why sometimes winging it is the best way! Practice developing a cartoon you can weave. Share technical tips that will ensure your finished tapestry meets your expectations. Design can be one of the most exciting parts of tapestry weaving once you have the right tools!

This class assumes you are familiar with the basics of tapestry technique, and meet-and-separate weft-faced weaving. We will be discussing how technical aspects support your vision for your weaving, but Molly will not be teaching techniques. Since the class focuses on design, you will not need a loom. Students will be asked to email photos to Molly in advance for inclusion in the class PowerPoint.

The class recordings will be available for 21 days after the last class.

The capacity for this class is 25 students.

Molly Elkind

Molly Elkind

Molly Elkind’s tapestry work was exhibited in a solo show in 2018 in Atlanta, just before she relocated to New Mexico. Recent work has focused on New Mexico’s high desert landscape, which is harsh, rugged, vulnerable and fragile.

Molly has focused on weaving for 13 years, but she is also fluent in papermaking, mixed media collage, and other fiber techniques. Molly earned an M.A. in Studio Art from the Hite Art Institute at the University of Louisville in 2002. Exhibition highlights include an earlier solo show at Mercer University in Atlanta (2009) and numerous juried and invitational shows nationwide. Molly has been published in a number of fiber art-related publications, and her work is in several private collections.

Besides making art, Molly is passionate about teaching it, with a particular focus on design principles and processes. She is based in Santa Fe, New Mexico and teaches both online and nationwide for guilds and conferences.
