About Hand Carding and the Long Draw

Survey and explore the art of efficient hand carding and learn to spin fast and with your hands far apart! Hand carding takes practice but its worth it. Fiber prep has the greatest impact on a peaceful spinning experience. Discover alternative hand positions to create lofty woolen yarns. Discuss thread and fabric fulling. For continuing spinsters who can happily spin a continuous thread made with any spinning style.

The capacity for this class is 12 students.


Materials, Equipment, and Supplies the Student Must Bring to Class

Spinning wheel in good working order with three bobbins, hand cards if you own them or can borrow them, hand towel


Materials Kit and Kit Description

Your class registration fee includes a materials kit with a value of $5 which includes:

Wool (angora, alpaca, sheep, home dyed) suitable for hand carding , some hand cards on loan, baby oil


Pre-class Homework

Minimum age requirement for workshop: 10

Skill Level

Advanced beginner (some experience)

What skills or knowledge do students need to take this workshop?

Ability to happy spin a continuous yarn of any style. Knowledge of their spinning device, wheel or hand spindle.

Martha Owen is an artisan/shepherd and resident artist at the John C Campbell Folkschool (www.folkschool.org) in Brasstown, NC. She oversees classes in spinning/knitting,crochet/feltmaking /surface design and dyeing. Her adventure in spinning began here in 1978.
