About Exploring Flamenco: Rondeña and Zapateado
Dive deeper into flamenco guitar as you learn the lesser-known styles of Rondeña and Zapateado. This course is designed to expand your musical repertoire, challenge your technical skills, and deepen your expressive capabilities through these unique palos.
Rondeña is a solo guitar palo recognized for its altered tuning and popularized by guitarist Ramón Montoya. Rondeña does not follow a typical flamenco rhythm; some parts are played freely, others in measures of two or three beats. The course will cover various techniques specific to Rondeña, including the use of thumb strokes, arpeggios, and the unique tuning that defines its sound. Note that the same name, Rondeña, also refers to a style of cante por fandangos, which won’t be covered in this course.
Zapateado, on the other hand, is characterized by its lively and rhythmic quality, mimicking the sound of dancing feet. Historically, the palo held a significant place in dance. These days, it is more popular as a guitar solo. Students will get to know the compás of Zapateado and explore techniques such as rasgueado, picado, and arpeggio to enhance the percussive elements of their playing.
What's Needed
Class Materials
• Guitar (nylon strings)
• An electronic tuner (for Rondeña, we’ll tune string 6 to D and string 3 to F#)
Playing Experience
One year of playing experience (any style) is recommended. Ideally, students will already know basic chord shapes and be able to change chords smoothly. Being comfortable with barre chords will help.
Less-experienced guitarists are welcome but may find this course overly challenging.
No knowledge of music notation is needed. I’ll teach using a combination of TAB and demonstration.

- 2. Learn the unique tuning and techniques for Rondeña.
- 3. Recognize Rondeña and Zapateado when you hear them.
- 4. Collect material to arrange in your own unique guitar solos.
- 5. Expand your technical abilities in thumb, rasgueo, picado, and arpeggio techniques.
- 6. Enjoy playing two new palos with flamenco guitar enthusiasts all over the world!

As always, it was a real privilege to be in this group! Leah's teaching style is perfect--so much is covered in each lesson, but never at a pace that's too overwhelming. She has a wonderful sense of where we are, which must be very difficult, as everyone's at a different playing level. We are encouraged to ask questions and to share answers as well as play something if we so choose. Besides all these points, I'd just like to mention how incredibly helpful it is to review the recordings from each week's lesson. I'm really looking forward to the next class, beginning May 1--meanwhile, I've got plenty of material to practice!

This was a fantastic lesson today! Leah's pace was just right for my playing ability--she want slowly enough so that I could keep up and yet not too slowly, thus keeping things challenging. I like the way she always demonstrates how to play things in a basic way and then shows us a "fancier" more musically interesting way to play it. Very much looking forward to next class!
