Introduction to Rhythm and Counting
About Introduction to Rhythm and Counting
In this class, we'll study rhythm and how it holds the song together. We'll use the following time signatures: 4/4, 3/4, and 6/8. We'll learn how to count whole notes, half notes, and quarter notes, which we'll use for the first 2 time signatures. Eighth notes and dotted quarter notes will be used with the 6/8 time signature. (Eighth notes and dotted quarter notes are more tricky in some time signatures, but are easier to understand in 6/8.)
After we talk about the notes values and time signatures, we'll play songs using what we've learned. Since people will be playing at different levels, I'll include an easier and a more complex version for each time signature.
If we have time I'll show you some examples of unusual time signatures, such as 5/4 and 7/4!
- learn note durations
- practice rhythmic steadiness
- count in different time signatures
- apply these principles to songs
