Stunt Knitting Safety Lines

About Stunt Knitting Safety Lines

You've seen the stunt knitters' projects — grafting 500 stitches in pattern, hidden cast-ons, smooth pick-ups, elegant edgings, blocking lace in half an hour, and perfect seams on the first try. Learn their savvy tricks! No, they aren't smarter than you. And they haven't been knitting for 50 years. They know how to use waste yarn to hold stitches, provisionally cast-on, make openings, or set-up guidelines for grafting and seaming and picking up along a selvedge and threading blocking wires. Now, you can know these secrets, too!

The capacity for this class is 20 students.

Pre-class Homework

Homework swatch for hem/provisional:
Using contrasting waste yarn and needle one or two sizes smaller than what you would normally choose, cast on 20 stitches.
Work a few rows in stockinette to establish waste tab.
RS: Work a right-side row using a second slippery contrasting waste yarn such as crochet cotton or dental floss.
Join project yarn. WS: purl. RS: knit. WS: purl.
RS: purl (to create fold line).
Change to normal-size needle — WS: purl. RS: knit. WS: purl.
Project part of fabric is 7 rows tall = 3 rows + fold line + 3 rows (blue in picture).
Leave live on needles.

Homework swatch for grafting in pattern:
Using waste yarn in size similar to project yarn, cast on 12 stitches.
Knit back and forth in 2×2 rib for about an inch.
RS: Work one row in slippery waste yarn in pattern — use crochet cotton or dental floss.
Tie on project yarn and work in 2×2 rib for several inches. Swatch should be long enough to wrap around so you can graft the end to the beginning as if making a bracelet.
RS: Again work one row in slippery waste yarn in pattern.
Again knit back and forth in 2×2 rib for about an inch.
Leave live on needles.
