Seed to Song: A Hands-on Songwriting Lab (formerly Spark to Song)

You know the feeling when a song really lands. Something in it cracks you open, or tells the truth in a way you may not have known you needed. If you've ever wanted to write with that kind of impact, you've also likely met the gap - between what you can hear inside and what you can reliably build. This lab is a supportive place to work inside that gap.

Songwriting is both heart and craft.

The heart is what you care about. The craft is how you shape it into something a listener can actually enter. In this class we'll build practical songcraft skills you can use, while staying connected to what the song is trying to say.

A map, not a formula.

A lot of writers are looking for a "roadmap" - not a rigid route, but a clearer sense of the lay of the land. What are the main parts of a song? How do they relate? Where do you go when you're stuck? What kind of step helps right now? We'll build that sense of direction, so you can steer with more confidence and less second-guessing.
Some songwriting programs lean hard on templates. Templates can be useful as models, but they can also stifle creativity and make writers feel like there's one "correct" way to write. Here we work with flexible techniques you can combine in different ways, so different songs can grow in different ways.

Playfulness is part of the method.

We'll use playful constraints, prompts, and simple songwriting games at times to help you experiment, notice what changes, and feel how the parts connect. It makes it easier to learn without getting frozen by self-judgment.

How we'll work (your own songs, plus shared practice)

Each session includes a short teaching, guided writing time, and group reflection. Some of the work is shared practice - quick exercises that teach a specific skill. Some of it is individual or partner work on your own songs. You can bring in works-in-progress, or you can start fresh in the sessions - both are welcome. Between sessions, you'll keep developing your material and bring it back for workshopping and support.
We'll work with three connected ways into a song. You can start where it's easiest, then add what's missing until the song feels more whole.
Story - character or POV, setting and tone, desire, trouble, scene beats, and arc (including weather as a way to paint mood without emotion words)
Lyrics - images and word choice, phrasing and line rhythm, repetition, rhyme, and sound-play (when useful)
Music - melody contour and range, rhythm and groove, harmony and cadences, tempo
Across all three, we return to a few core ideas, like mood, repetition vs variation, and tension vs resolution.

A living pilot - responsive and real

This cohort is a pilot, and that is part of the invitation. We'll have a clear spine while staying responsive to what participants are actually stuck on. Your questions and your songs help shape what we'll cover.

What you'll come away with

A clearer map of the songwriting terrain: the major parts, how they relate, and when to try which kind of approach
A practical toolkit for story, lyrics, and music - with lots of options, not just one way in
More agency and flexibility in the process, and more confidence about how to keep a song moving at every stage
A better feel for what to try next when you're stuck
You may also leave with drafts that have more life than when you arrived, or even several complete songs, but the deeper win is a steadier relationship with the craft.

Could this be a fit?

This might be a good fit if:
You want to strengthen the craft without losing the heart
You like learning by doing, with real writing time and supportive feedback
You like learning in a playful, collaborative way
You want tools and freedom, not a rigid recipe
This might not be for you if:
You want a set program and a predictable end result
You strongly dislike playful experimentation as a learning approach
You relish competition and place a lot of value on measuring accomplishments
You want a class focused on recording, production, or polishing performances
