Registration for MAFA 2025 Weekend Classes will open March 1, 2025 at 9:00 a.m. Eastern. and for weaving classes will close June 13, 2025 at 6:00 p.m., or when a class is full. Scroll down for the class listings and click the class titles to enroll.

NEW - Registrations for fiber prep, spinning, stitching, and rug hooking have been extended! We will take late registrations and walk-ins until class time. However, it helps our instructors prepare if you can sign up in advance.

Conference Policies
By enrolling in a Weekend Class and attending the conference, participants agree to the MAFA Code of Conduct and MAFA Photo Policy.

Housing at the Conference

Makers Meetup
Interested in fiber demos, make-and-take projects, and relaxing with fiber friends while at MAFA 2025? Visit the Makers Meetup in the Marketplace Thursday and Friday afternoons, and all-day Saturday.

Spin-In/Spin Doctor
All-day Saturday, join us for an informal spin-in. Throughout the day, volunteers will help with spinning questions on a drop-in basis, and we will have a variety of spinning wheels for you to test drive. Find the Spin-in/Spin Doctor near the Makers Meetup in the Marketplace.

Friday Afternoon Classes

 
  • Inspirational Fiber Blending - Friday, with Dia Robinson
    • Participants will learn how to craft a personalized fiber blend using an image as their source of inspiration and develop skills in color identification by examining a photo to create a physical fiber representation.
  • Intermediate Drop Spindle, with Cynthia Haney
    • Enhance your drop spindle skills. This class is for anyone who needs confidence on a spindle, and who has already taken a beginner drop spindle class, or has beginner-level experience on a spindle.
  • Inkle Weaving 101, with Sara Bixler
    • Join instructor Sara Bixler for an introduction to the inkle loom. Pre-warped looms will be provided for students to weave their first band.
  • Visible Mending, with Sheryl Kessler
    • Learn how to repair or adorn your fabrics with visible mending. This creative approach to making your tatters last longer keeps them out of landfills and saves the need to purchase new clothing.

Saturday Morning Classes

  • Making Yarn on a Spindle, with Cynthia Haney
    • Fall in love with the relaxing art of spinning. Make your first handspun yarn with a drop spindle designed for easy use.
  • Pin Loom Weaving, with Sara Bixler
    • Join Sara Bixler as we explore the ultimate loom for portability and designing for modular woven construction.
  • Making Handstitched Brooches, with Sheryl Kessler
    • Students will learn how to make brooches using a range of fabrics, stitches, and beads. The brooch is a soft sculpture finished with a pin back that can be worn on clothing. The class will include some embroidery, attaching beads, and other decorative elements.
 

Saturday Afternoon Classes

 
  • Spin Anywhere: a drop spindle class for wheel users, with Cynthia Haney
    • Discover the fun portability of spindles. This class is for anyone who needs confidence on a spindle. It was specifically designed for the transition from spinning with a wheel to a spindle.
  • Scandinavian Weaving on a Frame Loom, with Sara Bixler
    • Join Sara Bixler for a workshop taking a look at the art of weft faced weaving on the frame loom. Each participant will learn how to warp and weave several different patterning styles of the Scandinavian tradition including, krokbrag, rib weave and more.
  • How to Make a Quilt, with Sheryl Kessler
    • Students will make a small quilt to learn the different steps in quilt-making by hand. Directions for patchwork, making the quilt sandwich, quilting, and binding will be given.
  • Beginning Rug Hooking, with Cindy Irwin
    • Learn the basics of rug hooking while making a 7″x7″ flower mat, perfect as a mug rug or trivet. Then we will explore the different styles and techniques of the craft.

The MidAtlantic Fiber Association (MAFA) represents and supports a community of fiber arts guilds in the greater Mid-Atlantic region. Although MAFA is best known for its biennial conference - and now for virtual programs - the all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization also provides ongoing financial grants, fellowships and scholarships to promote education, development and public outreach in the fiber arts.
