Introduction to Embroidery

About Introduction to Embroidery

Embroidery is a decorative technique that’s making a comeback. From historic designs pulled from museum collections to whimsical images by modern designers, there’s a variety of images that one can create with fabric, colorful threads, and a needle. This class will teach you several common stitches used for embroidery (including backstitch, satin, stem stitch, and French knots), along with the skills needed to start a project (how to thread a needle, knot your thread, and tension your hoop). Time to practice stitches and how to troubleshoot common problems will also be part of the class.

What will students learn:
Students will learn how to do several common stitches used for embroidery (including backstitch, satin, stem stitch, and French knots). Students would be provided with a section of fabric with basic shapes to practice stitches with, along with a pattern to embroider. Discussion of thread characteristics, how to thread a needle, knot your thread, tensioning your hoop, where to find materials/kits, and troubleshooting will be discussed, and students will be given time to practice during the class.
