Many students are skeptical of taking voice lessons, thinking, “Do I really need to take lessons to train my voice?” The answer is yes! If you want to learn how to sing with proper technique, and with good vocal health, then taking voice lessons with a professional vocal coach will help you grow tremendously as a singer!

Here are some of my tips to help show you how beneficial it is for you to work with a Vocal Coach:

Learning from a Professional

Just like an athlete will train for a big game or competition with a sports trainer, a vocalist must do the same with a highly trained vocal instructor. A vocal coach will be there to support and encourage you on your musical journey, helping you to become the best artist you can be. Learning the proper technique and skills of healthy singing and performing will separate you from singers who are not trained professionally.

Networking

Learning from a professional, who has had a successful career in their craft, will help you learn more about the business and the entertainment industry -- possibly the do’s and don’ts of the industry. They will be a resource for you, and may even open doors for you, such as recommending you for an audition or recording, and getting you in touch with their contacts to help get your foot in the door.

Hearing another person’s perspective

Sometimes it’s hard for us to be the judge of our own voices, but hearing positive criticism or critiques from someone else can give us a brand new insight. When working with someone, they may hear qualities in your voice, that you may not have heard or been aware of before. From their perspective they may give you insight to things you can work on that you had never thought of before!

Being challenged

Having someone challenge you to be the best you can be, is only for your own benefit! Sometimes it’s hard to stay motivated, on task and focused, and having someone there to guide you and keep you on your toes will help you become a better performer. Always be open to the challenges of new music and new styles that your teacher may approach you with.

I hope this has given you more insight on how taking voice lessons with an educated music instructor will help you on your way to becoming the best singer you can possibly be, and the musical benefits it will bring!
