Bouncing Ball Hand-Eye Coordination Exercise
Use this simple method to improve your students’ hand-eye coordination. Explain the methods involved, and then demonstrate a few times before testing. For younger/beginner students, it introduces the value of hand-eye coordination. It’s also effective in a group setting with multiple students. This is a proven method I have used for years.
To Get Started You'll Need:
- One new tennis ball. A racquetball is also useable, but will react and bounce at a different rate.
- A well-lit area. Daytime works best.
Technique/Concept
Find a flat surface, such as a gymnasium floor, or a spacious section of concrete.
Underhand throw the tennis ball up into the air. Make sure it goes straight up.
When the ball strikes the ground the student should clap their hands together, clapping at the exact moment the ball hits the ground. They have to keep their eye on the ball.
Method #1: Capturing One Bounce
Different heights are more challenging than others. For example, throwing the ball up a few feet vs. 15 or more feet exposes different challenges.
Method #2: Capturing Two Bounces
Method #3: Capturing Just the Second Bounce
Method #4: Velocity Challenge
