Beginning Double Weave

Beginning Double Weave

Double weave is a versatile weave that can be used creatively and in functional applications such as weaving bags, pillows, jackets, and blankets. Learn the basic techniques of how to weave double cloth, double width, switching layers, seams, and tubes (horizontal and vertical).

Discussion, visual presentation, a printable handout and weaving a sampler in class will allow you to gain an understanding of how weaving layers is possible on a four-shaft loom.

Participants should be able to warp a loom independently, have a four-shaft loom with a weaving width of at least 10 inches, and use a yarn that can be sett at 8 epi for plain weave. Complete warping instructions will be sent after registration and a printable handout will be sent prior to class.

Class Materials

I recommend using a yarn that can be sett at 8 epi. Think worsted weight or #4 knitting yarn. This will allow you to clearly see the cloth as it is being woven and quickly weave the samples.

You will need a warp with light and dark colors which will allow you to see the layers clearly as you learn. A 2-yard warp is sufficient to do the sampler. If you would like to reweave the samples after class allow 3 yards. If also taking the tubular bag class on December 10th, add 1 ½ more yards.
