Composing Dynamic Watercolors

Composing Dynamic Watercolors with Annie Whittaker Pais

Composing a painting is similar to composing a song, a story or a recipe. You are communicating what you are feeling, seeing, and wanting to share with others. It’s an original, visual story. Composing a dynamic watercolor means using all the techniques of design and watercolor painting to best tell that story. For this class you will be using your own original photographs. Your subjects are your own choice. We will explore and practice taking these photos and choosing how to ‘crop’ them so they really lead the viewer to best experience whatever it is you are communicating.

During this four week class we’ll complete the process of composing from photos to finished watercolors. You will probably be able to finish approximately three watercolors.

The capacity for this class is 12 students. This class is presented in collaboration with the John C. Campbell Folk School. There will be an optional Orientation and Closing Ceremony hosted from the Folk School campus that students can attend online.
