About Hand-Sewn Summer Tunic

Join Sarah Woodyard to hand-sew a summer tunic. This rectangular tunic is inspired from Sarah’s recreation of historic hand-sewn geometric garments, using the width and length of your fabric as a design feature to create your garment and minimize waste. This class teaches: cutting out a basic garment from measurements plotting directly on fabric vs. using a paper pattern; hand-sewing technique; using a thimble; hand-felling; hand-sewn, self-finished seams; a discussion of how to add sleeves and patch pockets if desired. We will cut out our tunics Saturday morning and begin stitching Saturday afternoon with an open-sew session Sunday afternoon. Access to Sarah’s courses “Hand-Sewn Tunic” and “Hand-Sewn, Self-Finished Seams” will be provided to help you finish your project. This class lays the foundation of intuitive cutting and hand-stitching techniques to empower you to embrace your creative instincts.

This class is limited to 50 students.

Class Materials Needed

• Fabric: 3 yards of light to medium weight plain woven linen, cotton, silk, wool, tencel (or a blend of these).
• Thread: Any thread you have easily accessible but here are some options I like:
    • Linen - (match weight to textile). For medium weight to lightweight use 80/2, 80/3; for lightweight use 100/2, 100/3. I like to use a contrasting thread to make the stitches visible. But it is up to you! You can buy contrasting or matching thread. If using linen you will need beeswax too.
    • Silk - Gutermann silk is easy to get and is a really good quality.
    • Quilters Cotton
• Needles: I’d recommend size 7,8 or 9 “sharps,” “appliqué,” or “embroidery” needles. The finer fabric the higher the number of the needle.
• Dressmakers shears: 8 inches.
• Small snips: Look for “embroidery” scissors.
• Pencil and tailors chalk
• Measuring tape and/or ruler
• Seam gauge
• Thimble (optional but encouraged): Should fit on the middle finger of your dominant hand. Not too tight but not too loose it falls off. Where to buy: antique malls, eBay, Etsy, Lacis has a fantastic stock of thimbles.
