Designing with Huck Lace vs. Bronson Lace

About Designing with Huck Lace vs. Bronson Lace

Huck Lace and Bronson Lace are both beautiful block and unit weave structures that have intrigued weavers for generations. Either structure has loads of design potential for creating beautiful cloth. We’ll examine the differences between the two laces by studying each of their tie ups, threading and treadling rules. Using one profile, we’ll create a thread-by-thread draft for each of the two structures. We’ll also look at Swedish Lace, which shares certain features from Bronson and Huck. Along the way, we’ll discuss various design ideas/options as you consider designing your next piece.

This is a discussion-based class, but students have the option of using a laptop with weaving software during the class if they want to do some designing on their own. Have graph paper and pencil handy too.

I send out pdf books prior to class that are packed with text and diagrams for weavers to follow along in class as well as future reference.

NOTE: I request that participants do not share these pdfs outside of the group taking the class.

The capacity for this class is 25 students.

I fell in love with weaving about ten years ago, when I retired from my career in graphic design. The two disciplines overlap perfectly through my love for color, pattern, and the design process. I became an artisan at the Hartford Artisans Weaving Center and began teaching as well as weaving my own creations.
