Direct Painting with Natural Indigo

About Direct Painting with Natural Indigo

Did you realize that you can paint directly with natural indigo? Both in its blue and reduced forms? We'll explore all the options backed by the instructor's half-century of experience in traditional Japanese approaches to dyeing.

This course will include working on both paper and cloth - silk, wool, cotton, and bast fibers. The finished pieces will be completely wearable and washable. No dyeing background required. Many design options will be provided to get you started and launch you on your way.

Many people are intimidated by reduced vat dyeing with indigo or working with the various resists most commonly employed – string, wax, and paste. Direct painting with indigo offers even those with no experience working with natural dyes a high quality and satisfying option.

The capacity for this class is 50 students.

I have been working on a series of how-to DVDs on the subject of Katazome, with many side-project DVDS featuring Kyoukechi and other techniques and topics.

My book Make Your Own Japanese Clothes has been in print since 1988, and has never slacked in sales.

More recently I have published Singing the Blues-Soulful Dyeing for All Eternity (2018), A Collectors Guide to Indigo (2019), A Field Guide to Japanese Textiles (2020), and so on.
