Introduction to Music Notation with MuseScore
About Introduction to Music Notation with MuseScore
Introduction to Music Notation with MuseScore is a beginner-friendly class designed to introduce students to the basics of music notation using the popular software, MuseScore. Topics we will explore: software navigation, note entry and editing, score formatting, playback, file sharing.
This class is ideal for musicians, composers, educators, and enthusiasts who are new to music notation software and wish to learn how to create, edit, and share musical scores digitally.
The capacity for this class is 25 students.
Class Materials
- Personal computer or laptop with MuseScore software installed (MuseScore is available for free download)
- Headphones or speakers for audio playback
- Optional: MIDI keyboard for inputting notes (not required but recommended for enhanced note entry)
Class Goals
- Goal 1: Familiarity with MuseScore Interface and Basic Functions. The primary goal is to ensure that students become comfortable navigating MuseScore's interface and understand its basic functionalities. By the end of the class, students should be able to locate essential tools, menus, and palettes within MuseScore and know how to use them effectively for note entry, editing, and formatting.
- Goal 2: Proficiency in Score Creation and Editing. A key objective is to help students develop proficiency in creating and editing musical scores using MuseScore. This includes learning how to input notes, rests, dynamics, articulations, and other musical symbols accurately, as well as understanding how to manipulate score elements, adjust formatting, and apply basic engraving principles.
- Goal 3: Ability to Share and Export Musical Scores: Another important goal is to empower students with the ability to share their musical scores digitally with others. This involves teaching students how to export scores in various file formats (such as PDF and MIDI), as well as guiding them on how to upload and share their scores on online platforms or via email. By achieving this goal, students can easily collaborate with others and showcase their musical creations.

Class: Introduction to Music Notation with MuseScore
I am a skilled Finale user and have MuseScore membership which gives me access to a crowd sourced collection of notated scores and arrangements. However, I have never used MuseScore notation itself because I was reticent to puzzle out all the basic notation moves in a new program. Veronica covered an amazingly broad range of fundamentals in an hour. She is a very talented educator. Perhaps with a little video review, I now feel ready to at least do simple scores without having to figure everything out from scratch. Thanks for an excellent session.

Class: Music Theory Basics 101
Wonderful! I hadn’t studied music theory in 10 years so I basically forgot everything but Veronica explained it in such a way that I’m confident enough to try and learn some songs on piano on my own!

I couldn't attend the lesson in person, so Veronica prepared videos (one for left hand, one for right hand) for me that demonstrated a way to approach a new piece of music she selected for me. This was terrific!!

Once again, Veronica had a great suggestion helping me understand the rhythm in a complicated (to me) section of a new piece. Her instructions vary to the needs of the problem--very creative!

Very nice lady. Veronica is as she is on her You Tube. She stripped a song for a beginner but it sounds like orginal song.
