About MAKING THE INVISIBLE VISIBLE: Historically Based Storytelling Through Textiles
Karen Hampton is a narrative storyteller who works in many different textile mediums. Karen began her journey in the early 1990s when she began making work about her family. Early in Hampton's art career, she trained as a weaver. Her early work took on issues of colorism within the black community and later issues of race. Since then, her artwork has explored visibility and voice. Karen will also address several different art projects she has completed and how she incorporates historical research in her visual storytelling.

Karen Hampton is an internationally exhibiting conceptual fiber artist, addressing issues of colorism and kinship in her art practice. Using her training in fiber with her training in anthropology, she synthesizes the weaver with the griot, the storyteller.
Karen is an Associate Professor of Art at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston, Massachusetts. In 2022, she was named a Fellow of the American Craft Council.
