Weave a Small Tubular Bag

About Weave a Small Tubular Bag

Double weave is a versatile weave that can be used creatively and in functional applications such as weaving bags, pillows, jackets, and blankets. In Double Weave Basics (see the class listing for December 7, 2022), you learned the basic techniques of how to weave double cloth, double width, switching layers, seams, and tubes (horizontal and vertical).

This class will reinforce what you have learned and focus on the vertical tube. You will learn how to weave a small bag suitable for a cell phone or other small items. You will create a seam, weave a vertical tube and learn how to weave a flap for your bag.

Participants should be able to warp a loom independently, have a four shaft loom with a weaving width of at least 10 inches, and have an understanding of how to weave a vertical tube. Being familiar with how to hemstitch is also helpful. Complete warping instructions will be sent after registration and a handout will be sent prior to class.

Materials & Warping Instructions

• I recommend using a yarn that can be sett at 8 epi. Think worsted weight or #4 knitting yarn. This will allow you to clearly see the cloth as it is being woven.
• If you are combining this class with Double Weave Basics, put on a 3 yard warp instead of a two yard warp. If you are taking this class only, a 2 yard warp will be sufficient.
• Thread the heddles 1, 2, 3, 4. Double sley your threads at 8 epi, which means you will have a total of 16 threads per inch (8 epi per layer of cloth).
• You will be using a direct tie up to weave the sample bag. If you are using a floor loom the tie up for your loom is 1+3, 1, 2, 3, 4, 2+4.
• To check the threading weave tabby shafts 1+3 and 2+4 alternately. Weave in the Header and advance the warp a couple of inches.

Please reach out if you have any questions about the yarns or warping instructions. I look forward to having you in class and sharing how to weave a tubular bag with you.
