Louisiana Dance Roots (Thursdays)

Louisiana Dance Roots (Thursdays) with Brandon Broussard

Explore the history, culture, and movement of Louisiana dance styles such as the Waltz, Two-Step, Zydeco, and more—all from the comfort of your own space. Gain a deeper understanding of the rhythms, techniques, and subtle nuances that can often feel mysterious at first. Through guided instruction, expressing yourself—individually and with a partner—can become more natural as you build trust, confidence, and connection through movement. Bring a little Louisiana into your home and make this virtual dance experience your own. Students will need to provide their own dance partner, and each participant should register individually.

This small group class is presented in collaboration with John C. Campbell Folk School and Lessonface. Students are invited to attend an optional Orientation and Closing Ceremony to connect with various online Folk School classes.

Class Materials

Students should provide:
- Please choose a space with light-colored, uncluttered walls, little to no furniture, and good lighting, as this is the view the instructor will see of you during class.

- Choose a floor surface that allows for ease of movement. Wood flooring often provides less compression on the body and less friction while moving.

- Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely.

- Choose shoes that feel supportive and comfortable.

- You know your body and environment best, so these recommendations are simply suggestions—not requirements.

Brandon Broussard

Brandon Broussard is Louisiana-born and based, and has been immersed in the culture and partnered dance traditions of South Louisiana since birth. For more than 20 years, he has shared dance through lessons, workshops, and conversations that explore the nuances of connection — how steps, weight shifts, and body movement interact with musical resonance, personal interpretation, and shared energy. Through Louisiana Dance Roots, Brandon preserves and teaches regional dance traditions while helping people experience the cultural context, rhythm, and social connection that shape them. His approach emphasizes listening, responsiveness, and the lived feeling of moving together rather than memorizing patterns.
