"Allow Yourself Freedom of Exploration." - And other advice, from James Brandon Lewis.
Sony recording artist James Brandon Lewis recently returned to the US after a tour across Europe, and was able to find a few minutes to answer some of our questions. We are really thrilled to have Lewis offering lessons on Lessonface on sax.
Lessonface: How were you first introduced to your instrument? How did you learn to play your instrument?
James Brandon Lewis: My mom was a jazz lover and asked if I wanted to play an instrument. I said yes, of course, and began studies on clarinet -- which seems to be the normal progression -- before advancing to saxophone at age 12.
Lf: What do you think is the best path to learners now? Do you recommend a book/ pedagogical method?
JBL: Learn fundamentals and then allow yourself freedom of exploration. Find books that spark creativity. So many amazing books out here. Choose one that appeals to how you process information.
Lf: What advice would you give someone wanting to learn your instrument?
JBL: It's about the process, not the finish. Patience is a must to develop in music, but also urgency adds to progress as well in terms of wanting to learn new things and keep things fresh.
Lf: If you had to recommend one video or song for new fans or prospective students to check out in order to understand you and your style, what would it be?
Lf: What are your current musical projects?
JBL: I have a new record out entitled Divine Travels released by Okeh Records via Sony. I just came of the road touring 5 countries -- France Spain Italy Germany and the Netherlands in 18 days.
Editor note: Read Divine Travel's 5 star review on All About Jazz.
Lessonface: Do you have any favorite quotes about music, learning, or your instrument you would like us to share? Tell us here.
JBL: music is a healing force - albert ayler
Lessonface: What kind of instrument do you play today? (Brand, model, whatever you'd like to share) What model would you recommend for beginners? Any other favorite equipment?
James Brandon Lewis: I use Selmer Super Action 80 series 11 saxophone. Selmer makes great horns! and student model horns as well.
