String Handling Techniques Examined

Close up on Dave Heumann's guitar

You may have noticed sometimes that people can play the same guitar and sound very different from one another, or a player can play a variety of guitars, and still sound like him or herself. This video tutorial explores some techniques that can be used by guitarists to create a signature sound.

About Dave Heumann
Dave Heumann has been playing guitar for over 30 years. He attended high school at Baltimore School for the Arts as a music major, where he honed music theory skills and learned the finer points of phrasing and rhythmic placement.

Since then, he has focused on playing mostly in bands, though he also makes solo music and with collaborators. Arbouretum, a band he founded in 2002, is known for its solid songcraft and extended improvisational passages that feature intricate psychedelic guitar soloing. He also currently plays in a duo called Human Homan Highway, which plays experimental improvised music. Other collaborators and projects he has been involved with include Human Bell, Television Hill, The Anomoanon, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Cass McCombs, and Papa M, among others.

Dave Heumann was one of the founding teachers of Lessonface, and we are so delighted to have him back in the studio for this tutorial.
