Teacher of the Month for June 2019 Steve Boniello

Steve Boniello is our Lessonface teacher of the month for June 2019! Steve has taught on Lessonface since September of last year, and since has been students' favorite for electric, acoustic and bass guitar. We asked Steve a few questions so we all get to know him better this month!

In a few words, how did you manage to achieve your level of skill?

I feel it was a combination of things, but mainly having a strong passion for music from a young age and developing discipline along the way. When I started playing music at 13, I had friends who were playing guitar and drums, so I picked up the bass and we started playing together. The combination of continuing to play with others in bands throughout middle school, high school and college allowed me to get the feel of it. Studying music in college helped me to develop my playing and writing more. Now I feel it is a balance of spiritual practice and playing my instrument. I practice yoga, meditation, and other spiritual practices regularly and I feel these are the foundation that keep me moving forward with my playing.

What would you recommend our future Lessonface pro-musicians to focus on?

Stay disciplined and focused with your practice, but also have other healthy habits that help to keep you grounded and in good spirits. You need to feel good and have discipline in order to progress, and that involves more than just musical practice. Keeping an open mind and being versatile in terms of what you can play will help to create more opportunities for you as well.

Bass

What projects are you currently working on?

Currently playing free jazz with my teacher and mentor Tisziji Munoz. Playing and studying jazz in my free time and taking lessons on Upright Bass. Filling in on rock gigs coming up in the summer and may be starting a funk/groove based project in the near future.
