Hey,
Thanks to everyone who joined class yesterday. Attached is some basic exercises similar to some stuff we talked about.
And, like I said, work on finding songs that use these basic I IV V vi chords to practice with. Two we talked about yesterday were "Carrie Ann" and "The Mighty Quinn"...
https://youtu.be/K13hH0pJx5s (famous Manfred Mann version, key of B)
https://youtu.be/87zEgTVGpk4 (Grateful Dead, they play it in C)
Thanks, let me know anything you wanna discuss and hope to see ya next week!
Kyle
This week, we'll keep it up looking at chord charts and guitar tabs from the internet and figuring out how to make piano parts out of em.
And we'll also take a look at this Nirvana cover! https://youtu.be/r4dh38DYvyQ
She ended up re-harmonizing it into Zombie by the Cranberries with quarter notes instead of eighth notes. I realized that after playing it on guitar.
Ha, an excellent point. Good to see ya here on the forums, Ackra!
Hey,
Two crazy songs that came up in class the other day. Frank Zappa's "Montana"...
https://youtu.be/smZA9Jv3qH0
And Jon Batiste's "TELL THE TRUTH"...
So, a quick thing I wanted to say about "weird" or "complicated" chord progressions is that often you can think of them as simple chord progressions that have been complicated by related by "weirder" chords. So, maybe instead of an F chord I can use an "Eb/C", it just might work!
Here's a quick transcription of "TELL THE TRUTH" (more or less the piano part in the right hand, the bass part in the left hand, and a separate staff for the strings), for you to check out...

Ooh awesome - thanks for the transcription Kyle! I've never played these chords before :-)

Hey guys,

And, just for fun, that Carl Wilson clip!

So, first of all, cannot recommend highly enough the album "Heart of the Congos" to celebrate the legacy of Lee "Scratch" Perry.

And, as I've talked about before, reggae can be a great place to find pretty simple and repetitive I IV V type progressions that you can jam along to. Try the song "Children Crying" from this album, it's Ab to Db to Eb to Db over and over again.
Ackra, check out this pdf to get you going on common chord progressions and examples. I'll add more ideas to this later this week.

In class last week, we discovered the unlikely similarities between the verse of Carrie Underwood's "Jesus, Take the Wheel" and Sophie B. Hawkins' "Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover". Attached, find those written out if you wanna play around with em!

Bonus video to check out, an amazing live performance of another song we discussed, Hall & Oates' "She's Gone"!
See ya next week!
