1st Rule of Practice? Have Fun!

The most important part of practicing is that you do it.

However, there can be a lot that gets in the way of actually sitting down to practice. Life happens, after all. We may have the best intentions to put in the time necessary to learn an instrument and achieve our musical goals, but then the millions of other things competing for our time can snare us and pretty soon our brand new shiny instrument is in the corner (or worse --  the closet!) collecting dust.

Make it easier on yourself by keeping your practice fun. You may have specific musical pieces that you are learning for a performance or group jam. That's all well and good, but make sure that at any given time you are also working on a piece that you really like to play. If you don't have anything that you enjoy playing than practice can become a chore. We don't call it working an instrument. It's called playing for a reason.

If you let yourself be silly, loud, fun, obnoxious, or whatever else enjoying your practice looks like for you, then you will find yourself naturally wanting to pick up your instrument more often. Picking it up regularly is half the battle.
