Ten Clarinet Tracks to Inspire Every Clarinetist

Hi! My name is Dawn Linebarrier. I have been an instructor through LessonFace since 2014 and LOVE having the opportunity to teach private music lessons!

The clarinet is such a versatile instrument that can be used for many different styles of music. On top of that, the clarinet family is quite large, which only adds to its versatility. In choosing representative pieces for the instrument, I could list any number of songs and still not cover every one! Below is a list of some of my favorites along with the artist(s) that played them. I hope you enjoy the pieces and that they inspire you as a clarinetist!

Rhapsody in Blue – This isn’t a piece solely for clarinet, but the clarinet solo at the beginning is iconic. https://youtu.be/VAuTouBhN5k

Artie Shaw:
               * Concerto for Clarinet - https://youtu.be/nkXz1zA4jGE

Benny Goodman:
                * Sing, Sing, Sing – https://youtu.be/r2S1I_ien6A

Eddie Daniels:
               * Mozart Clarinet Concerto in A Major – This video contains all three movements of the concerto. At the end of the video, Eddie reenters the stage for an encore piece
                  which is not a part of the concerto. https://youtu.be/xQumbOFwMEQ

Quatour Anches Hantées – Clarinet Quartet: This group has such great tone! These videos are also great because you get to see several members of the clarinet family.
               * Flight of the Bumblebee arranged for clarinet quartet - https://youtu.be/OMR-jE6uvmU
               * Overture to Candide - https://youtu.be/G_PU6NavuH4

David Shifrin:
               * This is another recording of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto. What makes this one different, though, is that the artist – David Shifrin – is playing the piece on Bassett
                  Clarinet instead of Bb or A clarinet. This especially stands out when you hear the extended arpeggios. Another cool member of the clarinet family!

Richard Stolztman:
               * Introduction, Theme and Variations for Clarinet and Orchestra by Rossini – This isn’t the entire piece, but I point it out for a couple reasons. First, check out those
                  high notes at the end of the cadenza! Second, did you catch the little addition he made to the cadenza? Apparently it was a surprise even for the conductor!

               * Here’s a chance to hear the entire Introduction, Theme and Variations by Rossini played by Stoltzman - https://youtu.be/sQGf8g0aUkc
               * Suite from Carmen – Such a fun piece to play! https://youtu.be/-R0dzb2Fv44

Richard Stolzman and the Kalmen Opperman Clarinet Choir:
               * Adagio for Strings by Barber – Such a beautiful piece, and listen to those low clarinets!! https://youtu.be/yP7-YOJhVuU
