Four Tips on How to Choose Your Instrument

Choosing an instrument can seem intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be so hard! If you sit back and consider these key points, you will be in the right direction to find your future instrument.

Age

Some instruments are easier to play as a young child while others can be extremely difficult! For one thing, some instruments are just too big. It would be difficult to imagine a four year old playing an upright bass. For younger children, piano, voice, and violin are popular choices.

Musical Experience

Sometimes it is useful to have previous knowledge of another instrument to really master the instrument you’re interested in. Saxophone and oboe, for example, are typically taught after the musician has conquered the clarinet or at least had a basic understanding of the instrument. As previously mentioned, the piano is always a great starting point for any musician!

Natural Abilities/Preferences

There is something to be said about natural ability when it comes to choosing an instrument. If you’re missing your two front teeth, playing the flute will be very difficult! Similarly, if you aren’t very coordinated, it will be difficult to learn drums. Listen to your body’s preferences and take that into consideration when choosing your instrument.

Consider Your Musical Goals

Think of the reasons you are choosing to kick start your music career. Did someone inspire you? Do you want to start a music group? Are you making this your career? All of these questions will lead to different musical choices, ranging from practicality to accessibility. If you’re hoping to turn music into a career, for example, it might be wise to begin on piano and choose a more obscure instrument once you are comfortable. Musical diversity and uniqueness will help create a successful path!
