2021 Year in Review

Looking back on 2021 at Lessonface, we are humbled by the time and energy that was spent in lessons and classes that we had the privilege to facilitate, and honored by the music, arts, and language making that resulted.

2021 Year in Review Stats*:

  • • 66% more private lessons booked than 2020; and 216% more than the 7 years prior, combined
  • • 189 total subjects taught in private lessons, with 29 subjects new to Lessonface in 2021
  • • 18% more student-teacher private lesson pairings than 2020, and 52% more than the prior 7 years combined
  • • Average reviews improved, to the extent that was possible:
    • The average lesson review in 2020 was 4.97/5, and in 2021, 4.98/5.
    • The average platform review in 2020 was 4.88/5, and in 2021, 4.93/5

*Year stats include Dec 1 of prior year - Nov 30.

As a parent shared with us after one of the summer recitals, Lessonface "built many bridges into the future of art," and that is a role that we hope we are embodying well. Through the wonderful teachers and the hard work of the Lessonface team and many other supporters, we've done our utmost to keep the Lessonface ecosystem operating reliably while adding new features and formats to better foster connection and community, booking more private lessons in 2021 than in 2020, accruing thousands more 5-star reviews, and overall seeing teachers treated equitably while students make real progress.

While it can be difficult to measure the joy and beauty that music and arts classes generate, the skills and self-confidence that come through deliberate goal setting and achievement, we can see and hear it. Our recital participation more than quadrupled in 2021 compared to 2020, and some recital participants opted to share their performances, so you can too. We have also been honored by students sharing their stories with us, as shown in this video by Jose Acosta, who connected not only with a great trumpet player and teacher, Lee Hogans, on Lessonface, but regularly for lessons with his own father, between Minnesota, Florida and New York.

We have to above all salute the teachers on Lessonface, who have delivered guidance, encouragement, and consistency, in helping students reach their goals.

So, without further ado, we present the 2021 Teachers of the Year!

The overall, site wide teacher of the year is Erika Andres, flute teacher of Savannah, Georgia! Erika has been teaching on Lessonface since 2017, and taught over 2000 lessons this past year. You can read more about her approach to teaching here.

We have 88 subject matter Teachers of the Year in 2021 in 115 lesson categories, from Ableton Live to Voice. We award Teachers of the Year based on who taught the most lessons in lesson categories with significant activity. We feel compelled to note that there are many, many wonderful teachers on Lessonface who are not teachers of the year, and every year internally debate whether it makes sense to honor one in each category. We hope the TOTY awards are seen as a celebration of the teaching efforts of these named, and not as an exclusion or comment of the other featured teachers on Lessonface, all of whom are highly qualified and rated. If you're currently looking for a great guide for your 2022 endeavors, we happily recommend the Teachers of the Year, and also invite you to click through the category of your interest to peruse more great teaching profiles. Our goal is to help students achieve their goals, while treating teachers equitably, and we are very proud to have such an amazing group of experts operating in the Lessonface ecosystem, making it happen.
